The 42nd George Holliday Junior Golf Tournament

I just gave out the trophies for a junior golf tournament in memory of my brother George, who died in 1967 on a road trip to see the first snow fall on Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina, located off the famous Blue Ridge Highway.

For the first time in my life since my brother died, I enjoyed talking about him without tears and giving out the trophies to the young golfers he has inspired. I was only 12 when he died. Why does it take so long to get over or through or be able to live with the death of someone you loved? All I know is today was a freeing moment.

My brother George is a huge part of why I am writing The South I Knew: Love Letters to My Children. Now I know he is okay with this. I have received e-mails from people related to us, or who otherwise have knowledge of Galivants Ferry, S.C. It is so exciting to hear new stories about my relatives,  stories that carry the flavor of The South I Knew.

If you have heard stories about Galivants Ferry and surrounding areas or have comments, please contact me. My e-mail address is christydouglas@hollidayassociates.com. All information will remain private unless you tell me it’s okay to talk about it. This book is not only about my family; it’s about the community of people who supported each other, loved each other, had differences with each other, but were still a member and a huge part of a community knitted with different yarns of many colors… with many dropped stitches.

We are not perfect at all, but we need each other — and today was a testament to that. Seeing those young golfers playing in a tournament in memory of my brother and excited about their life. That was a blessing I did not expect to receive. Today I am thankful for the life God has given me and the windows he opens for us everyday. Jump in!
